Facts about Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is found to the northern part of Tanzania that extends to the south-western part of Kenya. The size of this park is about 30,000 sq. kilometers. Serengeti hosts the largest mammals migration in the world; the famous yearly wildebeest migration.

Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeests bear their calves on February and March which attracts lots of predators. By May, the eastern and southern parts of Serengeti start drying up which force wildebeests and zebras to move to the north; crossing through river Gumeti to south western part of Kenya (Masai Mara Game Reserve).

More than 200,000 wildebeests die due to hunger, thirst, predators and exhaustion. They walk for more than 780 kilometers.

Formation of Serengeti

The word Serengeti comes from the Maasai community, which means “endless pains”. The Maasi community had been grazing their cattle for more than 200 years before the colonialist arrived in the area.
